Gargling with Hot Water and Salt

As soon as there is a hint of a sore throat in the Hubbard household the kettle is boiled and the salt is primed. It’s gargling time!

Here’s the thing about gargling with hot water and salt…it works but it’s DISGUSTING. AWFUL. UNPLEASANT.

When my kids were younger, in order to get them to gargle, I promised to gargle with them. There was comfort knowing they weren’t going through the torture on their own.

While out of town on a business trip my daughter, 7 at the time, had a sore throat and was refusing to gargle. So I went to the hotel restaurant to get a cup of hot water and salt; then we FaceTimed, swooshing the magically potent potion around our mouths together.

The next day I was relaying the story to my client and he said “You actually gargled with hot water and salt? You know you could have just used cold water.”

It’s funny, that thought never occurred to me because:

  1. I promised my kids I would always gargle with them
  2. While my daughter wouldn’t have known, and never would have. I would know. And it wouldn’t feel right.

Integrity is as much about keeping your agreements with yourself as it is with others.

Only you know if you are in integrity.
