I was out for a walk and saw someone pruning their tree, which made me think of Edward Scissorhands. Specifically, how through pruning, he could reshape any tree/bush into an image he wanted.
This then got me thinking about a recent conversation I had with my high school buddies about an “incident” in grade 11 involving each of us.
As my one buddy was sharing his version of “reality”, I glanced around the group to see the same confusion on their faces that was on mine.
The simple fact was, his version was not the “truth”. And we let him know it!!
But then when buddy number two recounted the incident, his version was not close to the “truth” either.
One by one, all five of us shared five variations of the incident, and each version seemed to soften our personal culpability.
It turns out, over the past thirty plus years each of us have been “Edward Scissorhanding” our memory of the incident. Pruning our story to absolve ourselves of accountability and place more blame onto the others.
In the end, we have all distorted what really happened and none of us was willing to interrogate our “reality” because we were steadfast in protecting our egos.
Pruning is great for trees, but not so great for memories.
Is Edward Scissorhands working on your memories?
