What does one get Darth Vader for Fathers Day? I digress.
As of Friday I no longer have kids. Officially, I am the dad of adults!
As I reflect on my journey through fatherhood, there is one word that best describes my experience of being a dad; DUALITY.
I remember clearly the moment my excitement, pride, joy, and love of being a dad was replaced with irritation, judgement, apathy, and frigidity as a parent.
Only to have it swing back again.
And later to swing again the other way.
As a dad I was both Anakin Skywalker & Darth Vader. It was unnerving. Yet, it was my reality.
While I leaned into the light side of the force, I also possessed its dark side.
It wasn’t until I accepted and embraced the duality of parenting that I fully stepped into being a dad. Most days, good. Some days, not. But each day better understanding the force.
To all the fathers out there, wherever you are along your journey, may the force be with you.
