The Power of Smell

I have a few favourite smells. The smell of…

  • Rain on hot pavement
  • Fresh cut grass
  • Ground coffee beans (even though I don’t drink coffee)
  • The first time the furnace is turned on (what is that smell, dust burning? 🤷‍♂️)
  • Banana bread baking (Jennifer Griffiths 😉)

Our nose is always working. It’s smelling the good, the bad, and the funky odors throughout the day.

According to the Sniffer Institute of America, “It’s estimated that the number of odors that people can detect is somewhere between 10,000 and 100 billion, or even more,”

Your ability to smell affects your mood, your well-being, and even your safety.

That’s one powerful tool we posses.

Yet, we often ignore what the nose knows, to our own determent.

Have you ever heard of the smell test?

Hundreds of thousands of people are working inside organizations where both the leadership and the culture doesn’t pass their sniff test.

Yet they ignore their power of smell.

As Toucan Sam says, “Follow your nose! It always knows!

What’s your nose telling you about your company culture, the leadership team, your team’s abilities and your own leadership?

Are they passing your smell test?
